Alana's Story

Alana I. Smith, a Sacramento native, graduated from Natomas Charter School Performing Fine Arts Academy with a Renaissance Distinction and Acting emphasis. With her charisma and determination, she is pursuing filmmaking to educate the masses, elevate our differences, and embrace our connectedness through the art of storytelling. At 17 years old, she wrote, directed, and produced an award-winning short film, Wake Up. As the National Black Movie Association’s 2021 Reel HBCU winner, she was recognized as the “Filmmaker of the Year.” Following this award she released two short films, Forgotten and Too Fresh 4 School, and became a grant recipient of Black Artist Fund and Da Cypher Youth Creative Fund. She was featured on Good Day Sacramento, a local television station, to discuss her education in the arts and the story behind her filmmaking process. Currently, Alana is attending Howard University to study a Bachelor of Arts in Media, Journalism, and Film.

    Alana starred as the lead character, Promise, in TRIGGER at Guild Theater, which was featured in the Sacramento Bee. TRIGGER focuses on how adverse childhood experiences contribute to social and health disparities seen in our youth. Alana is able to use this platform to bring awareness to mental health in her community. TRIGGER is currently touring throughout California which includes performances at the following organizations: University of California Davis in Davis, CA (February 18, 2020), National Network of Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs in Sacramento, CA (September 10, 2019), Health Education Council in Sacramento, CA, (May 10-11, 2019), The Child Abuse Prevention Center in Sacramento, CA (April 18, 2018), the National ACES Conference in San Francisco, CA (October 16, 2018), where Alana was featured in Aces Connection, Kaiser Permanente Theater in Oakland, CA (November 1, 2018), and the Children’s Institute in Los Angeles, CA (December 14-15, 2018). Additional roles include a Lucky’s Grocery Store commercial and California Family Fitness commercial video. Alana was also selected to participate in the prestigious Lenaea High School Theatre Festival and won a silver medal. In the fall of 2018, she was cast in her high school production, A Raisin In Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, and she effortlessly portrayed the character Beneatha Younger. Alana’s passion for acting allows her to incorporate inspiration and education through entertaining.


    As a spoken word artist, Alana has empowered hundreds of adults, teens and children. In 2020, Alana was featured in the Sacramento Bee for her original poem, Dear Corona. She wrote this poem to signify her experience as a senior and to highlight the repercussions during this pandemic era. Alana was selected as a featured guest speaker to recite her original poem, Rest In Power at the Peaceful Protest for Our Rights march hosted by the NAACP, Sacramento Kings, and Hidden Empire Film Group. The march attracted over 20,000 people to rally for social justice and equality. Alana was a guest speaker to recite her original poem, Rest In Power at the annual All Youth Connecting Forum co-hosted by The National Youth Employment Coalition, the National League of Cities Reengagement Network and national partners with the goal of bringing together policy leaders and practitioners in the field of youth employment, alternative education, and young adult development. In 2019, Alana delivered an original poem, Unapologetically Melanated and Educated at the Power Rising Conference in New Orleans, LA. Alana's poem was so powerful, it led to a standing ovation with over 1000 guests in attendance.


    As a motivational speaker, Alana has educated, enriched, and elevated the masses with her insightful messages. In October 2019, Alana competed and was selected as the Best of Show Overall Winner for the Alliance for Education Solutions "Voices of Change" Showcase. This showcase provided a platform for young artists to use their reality and their truth to convey a genuine message of triumphs and resilience through the powerful art of singing, spoken word/poetry and motivational speaking. Alana was a speaker at the Clarity Conference and wrote an original motivational speech about adversity and perseverance [2018]. In addition, Alana was a speaker at the Mother and Daughter Manifest Your Dreams “I’m Pretty Powherful” Conference in Long Beach, CA. She was able to encourage her peers not only to embrace their culture but the importance of education while striving for excellence through aspiration, inspiration and motivation.


    After a competitive process, Alana was selected to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” speech by Red Skeleton at the State of the City when she was 12 years old [2015]. Her impressive public speaking skills led Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson to request her to speak at subsequent events in the greater Sacramento area, which included speaking for American politician and civil rights activist, Andrew Young.


    In summer 2020, Alana graduated out from the Far West Region of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Following her departure, she was nominated and won the National Freedom to Dream Award. In 2017, Alana delivered an original poem and won 1st place at Jack and Jill of America, Inc.’s Far West Regional Oratorical Competition in Tacoma, Washington. Subsequently, she won the “Overall Winner” Award at Jack and Jill of America, Inc.’s Far West Regional Teen Leadership Conference Oratorical Competition in Pasadena, California 2018. She managed to consecutively win 1st place at Jack and Jill of America, Inc.’s Far West Regional Oratorical Competition in Burlingame, California. In addition, she was selected from a nationwide pool to attend At The Well’s Intensive Program and Young Women’s Leadership Academy at Princeton University as a freshman and a sophomore in high school. Because of the accomplishments Alana amassed at a young age, she was selected as the 2020 Young Woman of Distinction Award recipient, which was presented by the Sac Cultural Hub Media Foundation.


    Alana is a dreamer. She was 1 of 100 high school students selected nationwide to attend the Disney Dreamer’s Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine [class of 2017]. This experience inspired Alana to establish The Dreamer’s Club, which is designed to help students through goal setting, organization and confidence. As if that is not enough, this teenager recently launched her non-profit organization, Beyond Umbrellas, Inc. to help underserved children. Because of Alana’s passion for giving back to her community she also extends her time, smile and patience to pre-k students as a teacher’s assistant at her local church.


    Alana is a voice of her generation through motivation. She continues to influence with the creation of her slogan, “We Are Beyond Things,” which was voted by her peers to be their 2020 graduating class motto. Overall, Alana’s various achievements are stepping stones to fulfilling her goals which revolve around artistry, education, leadership, global abundance, influence and purpose.
